Watching the historic flooding in Houston this week, I wanted to share my thoughts about how critical it is that we each take steps to mitigate preventable destruction on our own properties from storms and flooding that, according to experts, will multiply in frequency and intensity in our lifetimes.
Ironically, a large part of our job in designing your sustainable landscape is invisible to the naked eye. That’s because our award-winning expertise in landscape design planning integrates land conservation best practices that are proven to work in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. At East Coast Landscape Design, our mission is to help you achieve the most sustainable and beautiful landscape, custom-sculpted to the optimal environmental health of your home or business.
At East Coast Landscape Design, we know a comprehensive drainage and erosion management plan is vital in protecting you, your family and your home from the devastation of high water and other extreme weather events.
We recently had a client interested in mitigating environmental degradation on his property. The asphalt driveway, slowly deteriorating, was a priority. He and his family lived in the house for many years, and recognized the urgency of sustainable landscaping solutions, including porous hardscaping features constructed of permeable pavers, native plantings and soil engineered to sustain future landscape health.
Experts point to Hurricane Harvey’s unprecedented Texas floods as an example of why permeable pavers are crucial to restoring the integrity of our environment. Houston is a concrete “heat island,” that promotes storm runoff, pollution, excessive heat loads, contamination and flooding. Attractive and functional, porous landscape surfaces like permeable pavers allow stormwater to naturally filter pollution through the soil into underground aquifers. In our area, permeable pavers help keep the Chesapeake Bay watershed clean and healthy. Stormwater flows thru paver joints, capturing dirt, debris and pollution from flowing into storm drains and out of the vital Chesapeake water supply.

They did a retaining wall. It's perfect. They showed up when they said they were going to and finished the job up nicely. I hadn't worked with them before...I have some jobs in the works, and I plan on reusing them...I would call on them again...
