Washington DC Backyard Retaining Wall and Walkway

Here’s another example of the kinds of landscaping magic we perform on behalf of the clients we serve. A family living in Washington DC had a backyard that was essentially unusable. They had a very old deck that was rotting and in very poor condition. They wanted it removed and replaced by a patio designed to maximize their outdoor entertaining space.

The problem in this case was that the backyard was steeply sloped, which was causing water to pool quite close to their house. In fact, after periods of heavy rain, sometimes the water would threaten to creep into the house, which was the main cause of the deck’s poor condition.

The first thing then, was to solve for the drainage issue. This was accomplished by rototilling the yard, adding copious amounts of organic soil, then grading the backyard to reduce the slope of the land, followed by re-sodding.

That solved, we removed the deck and created a lovely, open patio with pavers, steps and a seat wall, but given the size of the lot and the fact that the house itself was practically on the lot line, creating a private backyard entertaining area proved to be a delightful challenge.

We found a way to incorporate a handsome Cedar fence with a gate and built a special area for the trash and recycling cans to keep them out of sight, and then turned our attention to landscaping the remaining yard space not occupied by the new patio.

Here, we were able to recycle and reuse a number of elements already in place in other areas of the yard, then added some lovely annuals for a splash of summertime color. The end result was a stunning transformation that turned their backyard into a glorious outdoor entertaining space. The family was thrilled!
