Yes, lighting can be installed in retaining walls, either in-between layers of stone on the wall, or directly under the cap stone. The installation of both locations are similar, the only difference is personal preference of the client and if they want the lighting to be an accent or used to navigate the area at night.

Yes, lights can be installed in the risers of steps, under the tread (the part that you walk on). This type of light can also be used on retaining walls.

An uplight is a light on the ground that spotlights trees or landscaping from below. A downlight by comparison lights up landscaping from above.

 

Shown below is an example of an uplight. They are placed on the ground and angled in such a way as to accent trees and shrubs.
