An electric coil system tends to be cheaper to install initially but is slightly more expensive to operate each season. This system relies on metal rods buried beneath the surface of your driveway. As the name implies, these rods are heated by means of electricity. That heat gets transferred to the surface of your driveway and melts the snow away.
Hydronic systems work a bit differently. They rely on a network of tubing installed beneath your driveway. When the system is activated, the tubing is flooded with a mixture of hot water and antifreeze. As with the electric coil system, the heat from this mixture is transferred to the surface of your driveway, and before you know it, all the snow is gone.
